Cultural Life in and around Tavira

Lovers of culture can taste it in Tavira and its region well into the hinterland. The "Venice of the Algarve" is divided by the Rio Gilão, which flows into the Atlantic here. A seven arched Roman bridge spans the river. Nowadays it is reserved for pedestrians and offers a good standpoint for photographing the picturesque houses on the riverbanks.
Apart from its typical architecture with the four-sided roof forms and over two dozen churches from various building periods, Tavira is also known for its multiple historical roots. The Phoenicians, Romans and Moors left behind their signs of occupation until Dom Paio Peres Correia took the town for Portugal in the mid-thirteenth century.
